Two jobs: more members, more visible causes

A membership organisation has a marketing problem most brands never face: it has to sell two different things to two different audiences, using the same channel.

Rotary needs to grow the club, and it needs to advance the causes the club exists for. Those are not variations on one message. A prospective member wants to know who is in the room and whether they would want to spend an evening there. Someone who cares about a cause wants to know whether anything is actually happening.

What we did

So the communication strategy ran on two tracks rather than one. The first covered club life — meetings, guest speakers, the events that show what membership actually looks like from the inside.

The second treated the supported projects as an ongoing diary rather than an announcement. Charity work has long, quiet gaps between milestones, and the standard approach — post at the launch, post at the ribbon-cutting — leaves months of silence in between and makes the work look smaller than it is. Running it as a diary keeps progress visible while it is still progress.

The result

Across the season the club covered 34 meetings, hosted 18 guest speakers, supported three charity projects and welcomed two more Paul Harris Fellows — with each of those visible to the audience it was meant for.
